Lost Forests – How We Fight Back

The EUA Price

At present, the price of carbon allowances (EUAs) is trading at around €76/tCO₂. We estimate that in the short term, over the next few weeks, the price may decline slightly; however, the overall trend is expected to rise as we approach the cold season. During the winter months, energy demand is significantly higher, which puts pressure on the carbon market and drives a substantial increase in allowance prices.

Wildfires in Numbers

In 2024, the world lost 13.5 million hectares of forest, an area comparable to the entire country of Greece. Before we could even close the books on that year, 2025 brought even more staggering figures: by mid-year, over 100 million hectares had already been destroyed by wildfires in critical regions for the planet’s climate balance, North America, Siberia, and the Amazon.

Europe has not been spared. Within the European Union, fires have already consumed over 1 million hectares in 2025, the highest level since monitoring began. And unfortunately, Romania is also part of this map of destruction: this summer alone, we lost over 125,000 hectares of forest, five times more than the average of recent decades.

But these numbers are not just cold statistics. They mean evacuated villages, families who lost their homes, animals reduced to ash, and forests turned into smoke and dust. They mean unbreathable air filling our lungs and millions of tons of CO₂ suddenly released into the atmosphere, accelerating the climate crisis even further.

Wildfires are no longer simply a “natural” phenomenon. They are directly amplified by climate change: hotter summers, longer droughts, drier soils. As a result, fire seasons now last almost the entire year. And paradoxically, every fire worsens the climate crisis, because burned forests no longer absorb carbon, they release it in massive amounts. We are entering a vicious circle in which climate change causes more fires, and fires in turn accelerate climate change.

What We Do at Carbon Expert

At Carbon Expert, we go beyond calculating carbon footprints and facilitating transactions on voluntary or compliance markets. Our mission is to find real, practical solutions that reduce emissions and protect lives.

That is why we are now developing next-generation software that uses satellite imagery, predictive analytics, and artificial intelligence to identify forests at high risk of fire.

Here’s what this project does in practice:

  • Analyzes soil temperature, humidity levels, vegetation density, and climate history to flag vulnerable zones.
  • Sends early alerts to authorities and communities, so that preventive interventions are possible.
  • Enables smarter forest management: clearing dry vegetation, creating firebreaks, preparing local teams.

Every fire prevented means thousands of tons of CO₂ kept out of the atmosphere, hundreds of hectares of forest preserved, and communities spared the nightmare of evacuations and the loss of homes.

Our project begins in Romania’s forests, where the effects of climate change are already evident and firefighting infrastructure is often limited. But our ambition reaches further: to expand this system across Europe and, in the long run, across the globe.

Conclusion

Wildfires are tragedies we may first see on the news, but we feel them in our own lives – through the air we breathe, the prices we pay, and the growing instability of our climate.

At Carbon Expert, we choose to be part of the solution. We invest in technology, prevention, and forest protection. Because the green transition is not only about cutting emissions in factories or transport – it is also about defending our strongest allies against climate change: our forests.
