The “Equal Opportunities for Everyone” project aims to build or create shelters for young people leaving foster care centers or orphaned youth.
Statistically, in Romania, approximately 74,000 children (out of a total of 4,600,000 children under 18) are under state care, and 26,599 children are raised in orphanages, most of them aged between 14 and 17. Approximately 2,000 young people leave foster care centers annually.
Thus, a significant number of young people leave foster care centers in Romania each year. Without analyzing the causes, we observe that the vast majority of them do not have well-formed skills and abilities necessary for independent living, do not know how to communicate adequately, manage their resources, or find and keep a job. If we add the fact that they do not have their own shelter, we see that after turning 18, they have a very high chance of ending up on the streets or in the prison system.
This project has materialized through the opening of the Helmut Schlotterer Social Center in Bilciuresti, Dambovita County. Over 60 poor children and young people benefit from education, support, and a warm meal at this center.
