PET Recycling, Greentech – Romania

The First European Project Certified Gold Standard for CO2 Emissions Reduction from PET Recycling Saves Over 45,380 Tons of CO2 Annually.

The “GreenTech Emissions Reduction from PET Recycling, Romania” project, developed by GreenTech, a company part of GreenGroup, is the first in Europe. It implements an innovative framework for managing PET waste through recycling, significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that would otherwise be generated by producing plastic from virgin raw materials. This initiative also accelerates progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During the 10-year crediting period (2016–2025), the project is estimated to achieve a total GHG emissions reduction of 453,800 tons of CO2, with an annual average reduction of 45,380 tons of CO2.

The project aligns with UN standards, promoting environmental sustainability by recycling PET waste instead of using virgin resources. This reduces total energy consumption, GHG emissions and the negative environmental impact associated with resource extraction. Additionally, it decreases the amount of waste sent to landfills.

Beyond its environmental impact, the project also brings socio-economic benefits:

  • Improvement of working conditions and income distribution to stimulate local and regional economic development.
  • Job creation and new opportunities for the local community.
  • Promotion of innovative technologies and regional integration with other economic sectors.
  • Increased funding for local municipalities to support social services such as healthcare and pensions.
  • Contribution to social and community development in the area.

This project sets a best-practice model for reducing carbon emissions through recycling, demonstrating a strong commitment to a more sustainable future.
